How to Transition your Wardrobe into Fall: Essential Tips and Trends

As the summer’s hot humid days begin to loosen its grip the daylight shortens, giving way to longer cooler nights, you know Fall is upon us.. Are you the person that waits for pumpkin spice season all year long?  A good time to start thinking about transitioning your wardrobe into fall is August right before September and fall starts.  This can be a fun and exciting process mixing your favorite summer staples with a few fall statement pieces.  Here are some tips to help ease your wardrobe into fall.

Layer Up

Layering is key to staying comfortable as temperatures fluctuate.  Start with lightweight summer pieces like tees and tanks as your base, our graphic tees layer nicely.  Add layers such as shackets, denim jackets and sweatshirts.  Not only does layering serve a purpose and keep you warm but helps with the shift into fall. You can wear the shacket around your waist or the shoulders.

Swapping out fabrics

Transition from lightweight breezy fabrics to a heavier fabric such as wool, corduroy denim or flannel.  Fabrics such as wool, corduroy and flannel are staples to stock up on and pull out when the weather starts to change.

Embrace Fall Colors

Introduce a fall color palette into your wardrobe.  Colors like deep burgundy, burnt orange, mustard and heavy rich earth tones are perfect for the season.  You don’t need to overhaul your entire closet, simply adding a few garments and accessories will make a noticeable difference.

Bring out the boots

Put away your summer sandals and say hello to boots.  Ankle boots, knee high boots and even cowboy boots are fantastic choices for fall.  These pair well with everything from jeans to dresses and skirts.  The vibe of your outfit will easily transition into fall.

Update your outerwear

Invest in a few outerwear pieces that are both stylish and functional.  A classic trench coat, heavier denim varsity style jacket, leather or a cozy wool coat will be great additions to invest in.  These items are investment pieces but are classic and my red wool trench coat and leather jackets are always in style and I look forward to pulling them out every year.

Don’t pack away your summer items

You still have some shelf life on the bright summer colors just pair with a denim jacket, boots or oversized chunky sweater for the transition.  For example, I would put a denim jacket over any of the below looks and swap out the sandals for the boots or tennis shoes and instantly the look changed.

Accessorize your Outfit

Accessories are a great way to easily transition your wardrobe.  Scarves, hats and beanies and belts with chunky sweaters are key.  Opt for autumnal color palettes and textures such as suede, leather and chunky knit.

In Summary

We hope these tips get you in the fall mood and help you strategize your closet shift into fall.  I store my spring and summer pieces in tubs and keep a few pieces out that will transition easily.  This trick allows me to easily search and browse through my closet.  Another tip, while I switch out my wardrobe I always go through and purge items I don’t think I will wear again. Donating the items or selling them on Mercari or Poshmark also can help fund your new fall wardrobe or season that you are entering.   I always feel nostalgic pulling out my grandma’s flannel shirts and corduroy pants I have had since college.  Always remember to bring your personality to life through your outfit, stay true to yourself and Be Strong in your look.
